Give Voice to Your Inner Muse
“As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being.” ~ Carl Jung
Kalliope - A Consortium of New Voices started in April 2009 and was published six times a year until May 2014.
Shavawn M. Berry, a professional writer/editor and college writing instructor, in collaboration with a trio of student interns, launched the publication. Conceived as a means to offer students a chance to learn writing, editing, revision, graphic design, and desktop publishing skills, it published 29 complete issues and six mini issues (Spring 2014). During its five year run, twenty-two college interns had a chance to research, interview, write, edit, revise and polish their work. In addition, since the fall of 2011, Berry's Technical Editing students also made contributions as writers and editors. Hundreds of student writers and professionals contributed to its pages.
The magazine's mission was to foster new writers -- allowing them the opportunity to publish work that offers hope, creativity, a sense of community and a voice for change. Berry felt that there was already enough bad news in the world. Kalliope was a means to uplift -- to inspire -- and to develop innovative, powerful, world-changing voices.
For all those who worked on it, it was a labor of love.
