Lighting One Candle
Kalliope was a sort of happy accident that fell into my life in April of 2009 when some students expressed interest in learning from me about writing, editing, and desktop publishing. At the time, I did not imagine I would start an online journal, but as it has evolved, it has been a real source of joy and inspiration for me. It has allowed me to work closely with young writers whose passion for what they are learning is infectious and inspiring. Kalliope was one of the nine muses. The word (admittedly typically spelled with a C not a K) means, beautiful voiced. I modeled Kalliope upon the principal of making a difference in the world through being a source of light, joy, empowerment and transformation.
Can a little online magazine really do that? I hope so.
Our world needs as many positive voices as it can foster right now. I am a big believer that what we focus on, increases. Since the mainstream media is constantly in a feeding frenzy over whatever road kill they can hover over and pick at, I thought this journal should turn its eyes to what is good, what is working, what is right. I don't know about you -- but that's what I want to see, read, and hear about. Kalliope has been my attempt to light a candle and see what comes into brighter focus.
This spring (2014) we are finishing our final issue, Change.
It seemed like the perfect time to close things out -- with an issue focused on change. I am not sure what's next, but rest assured, I will be publishing and mentoring and editing and writing something somewhere. It's been a wonderful five year journey. I am grateful to anyone who read our pages and passed our issues along to others. ~ SMB
